AVOID THE 12 STOPS 85 VEHICLES, MAKES 3 DUI ARRESTS IN SUPER BOWL SUNDAY SATURATION PATROLS

SANTA BARBARA COUNTY - February 8th, 2010

Sheriff's deputies and police officers on Avoid the 12 patrols stopped 85 vehicles, conducted 19 DUI investigations and arrested three people on suspicion of the crime on Super Bowl Sunday.

They made three arrests for driving without proper licenses and cited two people for having open containers of alcohol in their cars. Officers wrote 11 infraction citations and towed three cars, said Deputy Win Smith of the Sheriff's Dept., campaign coordinator.

"One of our deputies patrolling near Orcutt remarked that many of the people he stopped said they had decided not to drink because they had heard there were going to be extra DUI patrols," Smith stated. "Another deputy in Goleta commented on how little traffic he saw."

Ten more Super Bowl Sunday arrests came from departmental deployments in Santa Barbara and three offices of the California Highway Patrol.

The California Office of Traffic Safety funds Avoid the 12 through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Campaign patrols will be out again over St. Patrick's Day.
